When Mike Tyson offered $10,000 to fight a gorilla

Back in the 1980s, when Mike Tyson was undefeated and the world heavyweight champion, he wanted to take on a 400-pound gorilla.

Gorillas have nearly four times the muscle mass density of the most muscular human you may know. A gorilla punch is believed to be strong enough to shatter your skull, with a single punch from its arm: between 1300 and 2700 pounds of force.

Tyson had more power than any human on the planet, averaging 1178 pounds of force, according to Thrillist. The force generated is similar to being run over by a Vespa scooter at 9mph.

It all started after a visit to the zoo, when the champion noticed that a gorilla was bothering other primates. Tyson was offended and wanted to get in on the action, confronting the ‘alpha male’ of the group.

Tyson offered $10,000 to the zookeeper to open the cage and allow him in to measure himself against the gorilla.

I paid the zoo worker to open the cage for me,” Tyson explained recalling the incident. “They were s“I paid a worker at New York’s zoo to re-open it just for me and Robin [Givens, his ex-wife],” Tyson told The Sun. “They were so powerful but their eyes were like an innocent infant. When we got to the gorilla cage there was one big silverback gorilla there just bullying all the other gorillas. I offered the attendant $10,000 to open the cage and let me smash that silverback’s snot box. He declined.
